Avoid any tanning for 3-4 weeks prior to treatment AND use SPF 30+ sunscreen.
For your safety, any patient arriving with a tan or sunburn may be rescheduled.
One week before treatment
Stop all “irritating” skincare products including those containing retinol or glycolic acid.
Do not use a Clarisonic cleaner for one week prior to your treatment.
To reduce bruising, you may want to stop all non-prescription blood thinners 7 days before the treatment. This includes Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Fish oil, Flaxseed oil, Vitamin E and Aspirin.
Obtain all materials you will need. This is a good time to start using the recommended sunscreen listed below.
Gentle cleanser (Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser or CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser)
Mineral only sunscreen. We recommend Elta MD UV Physical.
An occlusive healing ointment (Aquaphor, Vaniply, or Oxygenetix Oxygenation Foundation)
A gentle moisturizer
Anti-viral medication to start before your treatment, if prescribed.
If applicable, prescription strength numbing cream. DO NOT USE IT. Please bring it to your appointment.
Three days before treatment
Start taking the prescribed anti-viral medication.
If you are using any products containing hydroquinone, stop those now.
If you were prescribed prescription strength numbing cream, please ensure that you have obtained it from the pharmacy. DO NOT USE IT. Your provider will apply it to the treatment area on the day of your treatment.
HYDRATE! Moisturize your skin morning and night. Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day to fully hydrate your skin and optimize treatment results.
Day of treatment
The treatment area needs to be clean and free of makeup, lotions or sunscreens.
Wear comfortable clothing. You may wish to bring a headband to keep your hair out of the treatment area.
Feel free to bring headphones and listen to music during your treatment.
If you were prescribed numbing cream, please bring it with you. DO NOT USE IT.
Be sure to notify your provider if there have been any changes to your health or your medications since your last visit. Some medications may cause you to be more sensitive to the treatment and may result in burns or an allergic reaction.
Notify your provider of any cold sores, rashes, or open wounds ANYWHERE on your body (not just in the treatment area).
What to expect after treatment
You may experience a certain degree of discomfort, redness, itching and/or irritation during and immediately after the treatment.
For burning or itching, you can spritz your skin with Avene Eau Thermal.
You may have mild swelling for 1-3 days after your treatment.
Tiny scabs of less than 1 mm in diameter will usually form 24-72 hours after the treatment and may remain for up to 10 days. This is normal. The scabs should not be rubbed or scratched off. Allow them to fall off naturally.
You may continue to have areas of redness for up to 2 weeks. Generally, this is a sign that collagen is continuing to form.
We are very careful with our pre-treatment screening and treatment settings. However, please let us know if you notice any dark spots after 2 weeks so that they may be appropriately treated.
Severe burning, severe itching, and severe swelling, formation of sores or oozing wounds are NOT normal. If this occurs, please contact our office immediately.
