SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING

Our skin care professionals offer microneedling for the rejuvenation, restoration, and repair of your skin. The VEI Aesthetic Center proudly uses SkinPen, by Bellus Medical. SkinPen is the first FDA-approved microneedling device.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure designed to boost collagen and elastin production in your skin. Collagen and elastin are both proteins found in skin. They are key structural components of the body and work together to keep your skin firm and tight.

Our microneedling treatment is appropriate for all skin types and tones. If you have a history of severe psoriasis or eczema, or are currently pregnant, you may not be a good candidate for microneedling.

Microneedling is often used to address the following skin issues:

  • Sun damage
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Acne scarring
  • General scarring
  • Dull complexion
  • Stretch marks
  • Dark spots
  • Blackheads
  • Large pore size
  • Hyperpigmentation

The majority of microneedling treatments, and microneedling devices, only concern the face. However, SkinPen has been certified by the FDA to treat wrinkles on the neck. Neck wrinkles have become an increasing concern of our patients due to long hours spent on their phones and computers. You may have heard of these issues referred to as “tech neck” and “zoom boom”.

Although the aforementioned issues are ones we commonly use microneedling to treat, your skin is unique to you. Schedule a consultation with us to form a treatment plan that centers around your individual wants and needs.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling works by causing controlled micro-injuries to the skin. When your skin is wounded your body undergoes a natural wound healing process, sending collagen and elastin to the wound to repair it. By stimulating this process, while minimizing cellular damage, we can effectively remodel scar tissue – resulting in youthful, smooth, and radiant looking skin.

There are three phases to the microneedling wound-repair process:

  1. Inflammation: The micro-injuries trigger your immune system. Your body will respond by beginning to disinfect the wounds, remove blockage or debris within the wound, increase blood flow, and then begin to create new skin tissue.
  2. Proliferation: New granulation cells will rebuild the wounds while a new network of blood vessels develops.
  3. Remodeling: New dermal tissues and the newly formed network of blood vessels replace the wounds.

Frequently Asked Microneedling Questions

Is Microneedling Painful?

You may not sense any pain during your microneedling treatment. We will apply a topical desensitizing agent to your skin prior to treatment. Patients generally do not describe the treatment as painful. If you do experience pain during treatment, communicate what you are feeling to the nurse providing treatment.

Is Microneedling Safe?

Microneedling is a safe procedure with minimal downtime. SkinPen can be used safely and effectively on all areas of the face, including the upper lip and lower eyelids. This procedure does not involve harsh chemicals or laser heat, so there is no risk of burns, blister, or hyperpigmentation.

What will my Recovery Time be?

Microneedling offers relatively no downtime. You may notice mild swelling and redness in the treated areas immediately following your procedure. These symptoms may last up to four or five days from time of treatment.

It’s important to wear sunscreen and to keep your skin hydrated following your procedure. Do not exfoliate or use alcohol-based toner until your skin has completely healed. If you have questions about what products you can use safely, ask our experts.
