COLLAGEN BOOSTING INJECTABLE USED TO TREAT FACIAL VOLUME LOSS
As we age, we all lose facial volume. Many of our patients notice the volume loss of their cheeks and nasolabial folds. However, patients are often less aware of the significant loss of youthful volume in the temples, jawline, and preauricular hollows in front of the ears. When we lose this lateral support at the outer contours of our face, our skin starts to fall forward creating jowls, folds, wrinkles and hollowing.
WHAT IS SCULPTRA?
To restore a youthful appearance, we need to replace the lost volume in all of these areas to build our support structure back up. Sculptra is an injectable treatment that helps your body restore lost collagen. Sculptra is the powder form of poly- L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is the same substance that dissolvable sutures are made out of and used safely for decades. The PLLA particles stimulate your body to create new collagen formation and then it leaves your body completely over the following months. Sculptra is mixed with sterile water, so most of the substance injected is water. Immediately after your treatment, you will see new volume in your face. The next day the water will absorb, and your face volume will go back to its starting point, but the tiny particles of PLLA are left behind. Fibroblasts are stimulated to creating new collagen and at around 8 weeks you’ll start to see a glow and the beginning signs of new volume. We recommend having your second treatment at this time frame. The number of treatments varies from patient to patient. We will help you customize a treatment to meet your aesthetic goals.

WHERE CAN WE USE SCULPTRA?
Sculptra treatments can be performed in the cheeks, chin, jawline, nasolabial folds, mesolabial folds, and temples. Sculptra should not be injected under the eyes, in the lips, or in wrinkles around the lips.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SCULPTRA?
If you feel like you are losing facial volume specifically in your temples, cheeks, chin, jawline or are noticing more wrinkling in front of your ears you may benefit from the cosmetic “lift and tack” that Sculptra provides. Patients receiving Sculptra must be immunocompetent and should not be taking prescription blood thinning medications at the time of treatment.
WHAT WILL MY SCULPTRA TREATMENT BE LIKE?
Initially you will have a consult with one of our providers to assess your concerns and see if Sculptra is right for you. Your provider will review risks, benefits, contraindications, and after care. The number of treatments and the number of Sculptra vials per treatment will depend on your age, the amount of volume loss in your face, and your treatment goals. On your treatment day, you will have photos taken of the treatment area and topical numbing cream will be applied.After approximately 30 minutes, the numbing cream will be removed and your face will be carefully cleansed. Sculptra is injected into the treatment areas with a thin needle. Most patients describe discomfort as minimal to mild. The treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour depending on how many areas are being treated. Once your treatment is complete, we will review your post Sculptra treatment instructions including ice and massage protocols. We ask that you massage your face for 5 minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days. We will explain exactly how we want you to massage your face at your visit.
Similar to other injectable cosmetic treatments, you may experience bruising and swelling following your Sculptra treatments so please plan social outings accordingly.
